PERSEPOLIS

QUOTE I LIKED MOST

"In life you'll meet a lot of jerks. If they hurt you, tell yourself that it's because they're stupid. That will help keep you from reacting to their cruelty. Because there is nothing worse than bitterness and vengeance... Always keep your dignity and be true to yourself..." Page 150

This is my favorite quote because it's not only something I live by, but something I found to be a common theme throughout Marji's story...

Her strong sense of self and abounding determination amongst the face of adversity really proved that during the lowest of lows, you must always have faith and the strength to stay true to yourself and your family...
:)

QUESTIONS

1.) Why was wearing the veil so important? Was it a way for men to show superiority by making the women "hide"? What did the veil represent?

2.) Religion plays a huge role throughout the book. I wonder how much influence it had on her understanding of the major events that she experienced in her life during that time. Did it have a major impact? What about her family and friends?

3.) Heroism seems to be another underlying theme throughout the book. I've always had an admiration for those who stand up for what they believe in... What does it mean to be a hero?

As one of the girls stated as she was referring to her father "I wish my father was alive and in jail than dead and a hero..." At what cost does it take to be considered a hero? Would you consider Marji one?
